Hydroelectric Dam

Donegal County, Ireland

Presa hidroeléctrica - Krystaline
Presa hidroeléctrica - Krystaline

DESCRIPTION

Initially put into operation in 1951, the Cathaleen’s Fall Hydroelectric Dam is a vital asset to Ireland’s electrical infrastructure.

The dam was suffering from reinforcing steel corrosion across the face of the dam at a height of 75 m. The purpose of the application was to remove all deteriorated concrete, clean the reinforcing steel and provide an effective waterproofing protection to the deteriorated areas that required repair.

APPLICATION METHODS

The corrosion caused cracking and spalling of the concrete cover, eventually exposing the rebar to the elements, further accelerating the corrosion process.

While working at a height of 75 m across the face of the dam, the application team removed all deteriorated concrete from the areas around the corroded steel. The deterioration required removal beyond the depth of the reinforcing steel. The steel was cleaned well after which the area was filled with Krystaline BLOCK F in one or two layers subject to depth. The team then applied Krystaline 1 slurry over the application area.

RESULTS

The application was conducted successfully. Following repairs, the hydroelectric dam continues operating at full capacity.
